The Montgomery County Council’s resolution urging Congress to cut defense spending has gained a fifth co-sponsor, meaning it has the majority of the council’s support.
Introduced Tuesday, the resolution seeks “major reductions” in the Pentagon budget in an effort to secure the savings for health care, education and road improvements in Maryland. With the new addition, it is sponsored by Council President Valerie Ervin, D-Silver Spring, Councilman Craig Rice, D-Germantown, Councilwoman Nancy Navarro, D-Eastern County, Councilman Marc Elrich, D-at large and Councilman George Leventhal, D-at large.
Since the County Council doesn’t oversee congressional budget decisions or the Pentagon’s budget, the resolution won’t have any direct effect.
