Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, argued Thursday that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has made it very difficult for all future Supreme Court nominees to move in the Senate because he thinks the ideology of the nominees is enough of a reason to vote them down.
“I wish he had a chance to see [Neil] Gorsuch over the past two days, and anybody observing that is quite seriously voting against him just for political reasons. That’s the conclusion I come to,” Grassley said, referring to Gorsuch’s hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee. “I think that we’ve heard Sen. Schumer for several weeks now, I think it’s pretty clear he’s a no vote in search of a reason to vote that way.”
“Republicans have never filibustered a Democratic nominee,” Grassley said.
“The well has been poisoned,” he added. “I think it’s a good thing that we go to a new well. [Schumer’s] got an opportunity to lead to do that.”
Schumer made his announcement about Gorsuch on Thursday morning and urged his fellow Democratic colleagues to filibuster his nomination.
