Woman who drove car into Black Lives Matter protest will pay restitution fees as part of plea deal

An Indiana woman who drove her car into a crowd of protesters last summer was sentenced to serve community service hours and pay restitution fees for criminal recklessness.

In a plea deal reached on Tuesday, Diane Goebel was ordered by Judge Linda Brown in Marion County Superior Court to complete 361 days of probation, 48 hours of community service, and pay $2,600 to two victims, as well as a $185 court fee.

Goebel, who was 68 at the time she was charged last June, was initially charged with felony criminal recklessness but was sentenced for a class A misdemeanor as part of her deal, according to a report by the Indy Star.

According to court documents, Goebel drove her minivan into downtown Indianapolis on June 8, 2020, the 11th day of protests in the city mirroring nationwide racial justice demonstrations following the death of George Floyd last May.

The suspect approached pedestrians and tried to drive her car through a narrow gap of demonstrators, according to footage shown on surveillance video. At least four people were injured from the incident, court documents revealed.

Two protesters who had their backs to Goebel’s vehicle reportedly bent backward as the vehicle made its way through.

Eventually, more protesters surrounded the vehicle, and some began hitting the hood and sides of the minivan. Some demonstrators were on the hood of the car when it began to accelerate before stopping suddenly, tossing those who were on top of the vehicle.

Goebel then accelerated the minivan, driving off before stopping later on to call 911. Prosecutors did not consider charging protesters for blocking the roadway.
