Chuck Schumer to Maxine Waters: ‘No one should call for the harassment of political opponents’

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer bashed his fellow Democrat Rep. Maxine Waters for her call to harass Trump administration officials, and said her message is “not right” and “not American.”

“I strongly disagree with those who advocate harassing folks if they don’t agree with you,” Schumer said on the Senate floor. “If you disagree with someone or something, stand up. Make your voice heard. Explain why you think they’re wrong and why you’re right. Make the argument. Protest peacefully. If you disagree with a politician, organize your fellow citizens to action and vote them out of office.”

“No one should call for the harassment of political opponents,” Schumer continued. “That’s not right, that’s not American.”

The New York Democrat said while U.S. politics is a “raucous affair,” members should treat others with the same amount of respect “we expect will be afforded to us.”

Schumer’s statement echoes that of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who said that Waters’ call to supporters was “unacceptable.”

Waters called on people to harass Trump administration officials in public after White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said she was asked to leave a restaurant in Lexington, Va., along with members of her family, because she works for President Trump.
