Florida father sues son’s school district over teacher displaying Pride flags

A Florida father has filed a lawsuit against the school district of Palm Beach County after a teacher allegedly displayed two Pride flags in the classroom.

In a lawsuit filed in state court, Francisco Deliu accused the school district, Emerald Cove Middle School, and the school’s principal of ignoring his complaints that his son’s teacher had prominently displayed two Pride flags and “proselytized to the students in class” about gay lifestyles.

Deliu cited the Parental Bill of Rights law passed by the Florida state government in 2021 as the legal basis for his lawsuit because it expressly states that parents have the right to direct their children’s education and “moral and religious training,” WPTV reported.

“There is no lawful authority that permits the teacher, principal, school, district, and/or board to teach, discuss, or otherwise educate the students, including Dr. Deliu’s son, about gay pride, homosexuality or the like but especially not in a computer science course,” the lawsuit says.

“I felt that was improper because I don’t send my child to that school to be taught [about] homosexuality and taught [about] gay pride,” Deliu said in an interview with WPTV. “I thought we sent children to school to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic.”

Sexuality in public schools has been a contentious issue in Florida over the last year after state lawmakers passed a bill prohibiting classroom instruction of sexual orientation and gender identity before fourth grade. The law, the Parental Rights in Education Act, was dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay bill” by critics who said it would be harmful to gay and transgender students. The word “gay” did not appear in the text of the bill.

The school district told the Palm Beach TV station that it “look[s] forward to the facts in this case unfolding during the process.”
