Many young people dream of winning the World Cup.
One group of 3- to 6-year-olds, are working toward that dream with lots of practice.
Timothy Shetterly, 6, said he loves playing soccer, “because it?s so fun running around. It makes me stronger.”
A seven-week clinic at the William J. Meyers Soccer Pavilion in Baltimore began Thursday where children are taught the ropes of soccer.
Shetterly began playing soccer in April with his twin sister, Rebecca. He said he wouldn?t mind being a professional soccer player, because soccer is fun and he likes to get sweaty.
“I love the kids, I love the sports and teaching them different activities,” Kay Overton, manager and facility director of the pavilion has been coaching the youngsters for 14 years. She has been with the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks since May 1966.
Overton said she didn?t use to start the children on soccer at age 3 until last year, when older brothers and sisters asked her to. “The program just took off last winter. I had a couple hundred kids,” she said.
“There?s a lot of kids that come here and don?t have enough confidence,” Kate Bradley, who helps coach the children, said. “I can?t say enough of Kay. She has the patience with the kids, and they learn to love the game. That?s something I want to be a part of.”
