Gov. Mike DeWine to address virus surge in Ohio, leading to speculation about closures

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine will hold a televised address this evening on the recent spread of the coronavirus in the Buckeye State. Some are speculating that he may roll back Ohio’s reopening.

DeWine, a Republican, did not hold his usual 2 p.m. press conference on Tuesday.

Coronavirus cases have been surging at more than 1,000 a day since July 1. On Friday, Ohio saw its highest number of new cases yet at 1,525. COVID-19 hospitalizations have increased at a daily average of 95 over the last week.

“Are new closures coming?” asked a local Fox affiliate, suggesting that the surge may compel DeWine to restrict parts of Ohio’s economy that he began reopening in May.

On May 1, he permitted hospitals to resume elective procedures, and manufacturing and construction reopened on May 4. Retailers resumed business on May 12.

On July 7, DeWine extended the ban on mass gatherings in Ohio that has been in place since March, forbidding any gathering of more than 10 people.
