Cal hits home run for Villa Julie

Since it first opened its doors in 1947, Villa Julie College has kept true to its motto ? For Learning, For Living.

And recently, the two-campus school (Green Spring Valley and Owings Mills) celebrated its new fundraising campaign with that motto in mind.

Called “Inspiring Students, Building Leaders,” a recent Owings Mills get-together of supporters ? with reception and dinner ? attracted more than 200 faculty, alumni and friends.

Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. was front and center as the keynote speaker, and Maryland Public Television?s Jeff Salkin was the emcee. Also featured was Amanda Bory, who gave a student?s perspective on the college.

“I strive daily to give back to the college community, whose support and encouragement has been ? and continues to be ?unconditional,” she said.

Guests included Anna and Jaime Fishman, Sharon Akers, Rick Haberstick, Villa Julie President Kevin J. Manning, campaign co-chair Orsia Young and honorary co-chair Charles E. “Ted” Herget with his wife, Nancy.

The great news is that the $20 million goal ? to support construction of a new School of Business and to aid scholarships and special projects ? is only $5 million short. And they?ve only just begun.

ART FOR ?ARTS? SAKE

The Baltimore Choral Arts Society held an art-fair benefit this past weekend at The Maryland Historical Society. A Patrons Champagne Preview ? also know as a sneak peak and buy ? kicked off the festivities, as guests enjoyed delicious food from Watson Caterers and a lovely performance from music director Tom Hall and the Society?s Chamber Chorus. Executive Director Linda Moxely, who also participated in the art sale, introduced Socially Speaking to event co-chairs Judy Witt and Ellen Bernard, committee member Jenness Hall and Society President Andrea L. Bowman.

“How lucky we are to have such great talent right here in Maryland,” said Witt.

Some of the locals included Derek McGowan, Bernnard Perlman, George S. Wills and Kini Collins, as more than 75 artists participated.

Also in attendance was Baltimore?s No. 1 radio talk-show host and former Baltimore City Police Commissioner Ed Norris, whose wife, Kate, is a painter.

More than $45,000 was raised.
