Volunteers honored by county executive, council

Columbia resident Richard Davis was named the 2006 Volunteer of the Year award. He was among 41 individuals and 11 community groups honored Thursday by Howard County Executive Jim Robey and the County Council.

Davis volunteers one day a week in the Howard County General Hospital?s Cardiac Rehab unit. He also volunteers at the National Aquarium and the county chapter of the American Field Services, which works with foreign exchange students.

The Community Organization of the Year award went to the Cold Weather Shelter Program of the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center for working with religious congregations to provide shelter for the homeless during the winter.

Dorothy and Dean Smeins of Dayton were awarded the Commitment to Service award for their 31-years with Meals on Wheels.

Carrie Gartner and Shayna Meliker, both Centennial High School seniors, were awarded the Student Team of the Year award for creating the Miles for Miracles walk, which is held each year in Centennial Park. They started the walk four years ago to help one of their teachers who was diagnosed with Crohn?s disease
