Trump will meet with White House aides on Monday to discuss options for a stimulus package aimed at countering the economic impact of the virus.
Earlier on Monday, Senate Finance Chairman Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, announced that he was exploring tax relief to counter the virus’s effect on the economy.
“Several options within the committee’s jurisdiction are being considered as we learn more about the effects on specific industries and the overall economy,” a committee spokesman said in a statement.
Markets tanked Monday as fears set in that the spread of the virus could seriously undermine commerce, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average off as much as 7%. Adding to the turbulence was an oil price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia that sent prices down nearly a quarter.
