9 hurt in Beltway crash in MontCo

Nine people were injured Tuesday in a crash on the Inner Loop of the Beltway that tied up traffic for hours, authorities said.

The crash happened just before noon on Interstate 495 near Georgia Avenue, when a tractor-trailer rear-ended a car, sparking a chain reaction, Maryland State Police said. Police said a total of six cars, plus the tractor-trailer, were involved in the collision.

Nine people, including one child, were taken to hospitals, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. Five had serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the others’ injuries were less severe, Assistant Chief Scott Graham said.

Police said lanes were closed for cleanup for about three-and-a-half hours, but the highway was fully open by late afternoon.

No one has been charged in the crash, but police are continuing to investigate.
