The Washington National Opera annouced on Thursday that Francesca Zambello will become the permanent artistic director for the organization. She had been acting in the role of artistic adviser since her predacessor, Placido Domingo, stepped down as director last year. Zambello says that one of her goals is to attrached new audiences to the opera in D.C. Her production of “Showboat” will hit the Kennedy Center in 2013.
