A Jessup man charged in the shooting last year of a Columbia man?s home was sentenced to four years in jail Tuesday, after entering into a plea agreement.

Maurice Dorrell Fowler, 22, was initially charged with attempted murder for his part in the Aug. 22 shooting, during which a gunman unloaded six 9mm bullets into the bedroom window of Michael Alan Spitler?s house on the 5010 block of Durham Road East. Tuesday, Fowler pleaded guilty to first-degree assault.

The 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun used in the shooting was traced to Fowler and he admitted to accompanying another man to the house that night, but prosecutors said Fowler didn?t pull the trigger.

The man suspected of firing Fowler?s gun has not been charged because of “evidentiary issues,” said Assistant State?s Attorney David Lank.

Howard County Circuit Judge Diane Leasure suspended all but four years of Fowler?s nine-year sentence.
