President Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, is set to campaign for a Montana Republican, making this his second campaign appearance for a GOP candidate in the months after he pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI as part of the special counsel’s Russian investigation.
“It is time to stand up for our #American Heroes,” Air Force veteran and Republican Senate candidate, Troy Downing tweeted. “I am excited to announce that American Patriot @GenFlynn will be joining me in #Montana very soon. Details to come!”
If elected Senator, Downing has repeatedly promised to support Trump’s agenda. Using Flynn as a campaign surrogate could be seen as a pledge to that.
This follows Flynn’s appearance at a March campaign event for Omar Navarro, a Republican competing to unseat Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., in the 2018 midterm election.
Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general, resigned under pressure from Trump’s administration early last year after it was revealed that he lied about his contact with then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
In December 2017, he pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his communications with Kislyak and afterwards began cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between Russian officials and Trump’s campaign.
