Young Nevada girl who shielded brother during shooting awarded medal

A young girl from Nevada is being recognized for her courage after she took a bullet for her younger brother during a parking lot shooting in Las Vegas last month.

Commissioners from Clark County, Nev., awarded 10-year-old Aaliyah Inghram a medal and dubbed June 5, 2018, “Aaliyah Inghram Day,” according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The shooting occurred on May 8.

After purchasing water at a local Walmart, 26-year-old Samantha Tygret was handing cookies to her three children and nephew inside their white Chevrolet Tahoe when they found themselves caught in a crossfire between two men with guns.

Tygret took a bullet in the shoulder, and her daughter Aaliyah, who jumped on top of her younger brother, took a bullet in the rear end.

“I didn’t want him to get hurt, because he is only 18 months old, and then my cousin is only 15 months old,” Aaliyah said.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said one suspect is under arrest, and the other has not yet been found.
