Kevin McCarthy urged against politicizing Jan. 6: Audio recording

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) pushed against politicization in the aftermath of the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, according to new audio recordings.

The recordings were captured by former Washington, D.C., police officer Michael Fanone during a meeting with McCarthy and others after the riot.

In one of the recordings, the former D.C. police officer pushed back against McCarthy after the minority leader advocated a depoliticized solution to the riots, saying that the riots were “political because it happened here on Capitol Hill, and it involved a political movement.”

Also included in the undated recordings, McCarthy told the mother of D.C. police officer Brian Sicknick, who died the day after the riot of natural causes, that he did not believe former President Donald Trump knew the significance of the riot when he spoke to him.

“I’m just telling you from my phone call I don’t know that he did know at that point,” McCarthy said in response to Gladys Sicknick asking why Trump did not call off the mob sooner.

The recordings from Fanone were released as the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot is set to hold its final hearing Thursday at 1 p.m., less than four weeks before the midterm elections.
