Robert DeNiro: We’re ‘beyond trying to see another person’s point of view’ under Trump

Actor Robert DeNiro suggested that it’s not worth trying to understand the point of view of President Trump and his supporters, given all the “bad” things happening under Trump.

“We’re at a point with all of this where it’s beyond trying to see another person’s point of view,” DeNiro told Indie Wire in an interview published Wednesday.

“There are ways you can talk about that, but we’re at a point where the things that are happening in our country are so bad, and it comes from Trump,” he continued. “We have real issues in this country.”

DeNiro made the comments after being asked about the ratings success of ABC’s “Roseanne” revival, in which comedian Roseanne Barr portrays a Trump supporter. DeNiro added he had no qualms playing characters with opposing ideologies to his own.

“I could play somebody who’s a total lunatic,” DeNiro said. “I could play somebody who’s a member of the NRA. It doesn’t mean I subscribe to that. That’s what an actor does.”

DeNiro has been a vocal critic of Trump. Last May, he used his acceptance of The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Chaplin Award to blast what he perceived as Trump’s apparent “hostility toward art.”
