D.C. Fire Chief Dennis Rubin told his department Friday that he will leave his position as chief on Jan. 2, when the new mayoral administration takes over.
In March 2007, Rubin was Major Adrian’s Fenty’s top choice for the position. He is the second cabinet member to announce a planned resignation since D.C. Council Chairman Vince Gray won the Democratic mayor primary. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee announced her resignation Oct. 13.
With more than 35 years of fire and rescue experience, Rubin has also served as a firefighter and company grade and command level officer in many fire departments including ones in the District and Virginia.
Rubin said the position as chief has been a great opportunity and he will leave without regrets. He plans to consult while he finds a permanent, full-time position.
