?High-level? dealer held in cop assault

Baltimore police have arrested a “high-level drug dealer” they say struck two Baltimore City police officers Wednesday with his SUV as they attempted to arrest the man.

Police arrested the man at 6:30p.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of North Avenue after raiding an apartment and seizing $130,000 and “a substantial amount of narcotics believed to be cocaine,” said Sterling Clifford, a Baltimore police spokesman.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m. two police officers were attempting to arrest a drug suspect in the 900 block of East 33rd Street in Baltimore, police said.

The suspect was in a late model Infiniti SUV and struck the officers in an attempt to escape, Clifford said.

Steve Mahan, 37, a 12-year veteran of the force, sustained a serious injury to his left leg that required surgery.

Clifford said Mahan underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

The other officer, Gus Passamichalis, 42, a 16-year veteran, has a less serious injury to his right leg.

Police have recovered the vehicle that struck the officers. They have not released the name of the man arrested, pending formal charges.

“The police officers were run down when they were attempting to make an arrest of a high-level drug dealer in Baltimore,” Clifford said.
