Although two of the members of local rock trio Lemonface will be graduating from high school soon, that won?t stop them from continuing to make music.
“We hope to continue playing as long as we can,” said bassist/vocalist Dana Wilentz. “College is our Plan B.”
Lemonface has already rocked the 9:30 Club and the Black Cat in D.C., CBGB?s 313 Gallery in New York City, and the Cobalt Cafe in Los Angeles.
The group, which also includes Richard Wynne on guitar/vocals, and Brendan McCusker on drums formed in 2004. “Richard and I met at a rock band camp when we were 12, and we started writing together,” Wilentzsaid. “We met Brendan through a drum teacher in 2004, and we?ve been performing together ever since.”
All three members were deep-rooted in music at a young age. McCusker began playing drums at age nine, while Wynne has been playing guitar since age 11. Wilentz began singing as soon as she was able to talk, and started playing bass at age 11.
The band has opened for other musicians like Rooney, Augustana and Flogging Molly, but wouldn?t mind sharing the stage with “Weezer, Motion City Soundtrack, Fall Out Boy, and Mayhem, to name a few,” Wynne said.
Even though coming together for practice is somewhat of a challenge because of their locations, McCusker said they manage to get together at least twice a week. “Dana and I live in Montgomery County, and Richard lives in Vienna, Virginia. It?s a bit of a drive for all of us, but we make it work because we love playing together.”
Lemonface?s influences include everything from jazz greats like Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis, to folk rock like Sufjan Stevens. Their 6-song EP was released in May, and they play the 8×10 in Baltimore for the third time on December 29.
And although the future may be uncertain, the band still has one common goal. “We want to tour, record, and go as far as we can,” said Wynne. “We want to make a career out of the music we enjoy making.”
