Sanders: ‘The model of the Democratic Party is failing’

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., urged the Democratic Party to do some soul searching after he went on a unity tour of red states with the Democratic National Committee.

“I think what is clear to anyone who looks at where the Democratic Party today is, that the model of the Democratic Party is failing,” Sanders told CBS on Sunday.

“Clearly the Democratic Party has got to change,” he added, citing Democrats’ losses in the presidential election as well as congressional races.

Sanders emphasized that he wants to see the party become “a grassroots party” that stands up to the wealthy.

“The Democratic Party has got to take the lead, rally people, young people, working people, stand up to the billionaire class,” Sanders said.

If Democrats can accomplish that, Sanders continued, the party has a promising future.

“And when we do that, you’re going to see voter turnout swell. You’re going to see people coming in and running for office. You’re going to see Democrats regain control of the United States Congress.”
