Groups sue Virginia over poll clothing restrictions

The ACLU of Virginia and two other free speech groups in the state filed a federal lawsuit against Virginia elections officials on Wednesday seeking to overturn a ban on political clothing at polling places. The ACLU, the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression and the Rutherford Institute made good on a promise to file the suit after the Nov. 4 election.

The suit targets registrars in Richmond and Fairfax County and the Virginia State Board of Elections. The groups represent plaintiffs who were asked to remove or cover up a campaign button or sticker on Election Day.
