Pentagon warns of scam aimed at veterans

Military officials are warning disabled veterans that an email sent out this week promising them a larger tax refund is part of a scam aimed at gathering their personal information.

The emails look like they come from an employee with military’s Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) and misleads recipients by using a false dot mil address. That ruse  is known as “spoofing” and creates a forgery of a legitimate email address.

The email states that veterans can apply to receive money by sending copies of their VA award letter,  income tax returns,  1099-Rs, RAS statements, and a copy of DD 214, to a retired colonel at an address in Florida.

“It’s extremely unfortunate that someone is trying to take advantage of our disabled vets,” said Tom LaRock, director of communications for DFAS.

LaRock said military personnel can obtain more information at the department’s Facebook and web site:   http://www.facebook.com/DefenseFinanceandAccountingService
