One U.S. service member was killed and others were injured Wednesday while fighting the Islamic State in Afghanistan, according to U.S. Forces Afghanistan.
The unidentified troops were on a mission with Afghan security forces against the group’s affiliate in the country, ISIS-Khorasan, which has been active in the eastern part of the country along the Pakistan border. The location of the incident Wednesday was not identified.
The wounded troops were evacuated for medical treatment and efforts were underway to notify the family of the service member who was killed, the command said.
It was the eleventh U.S. military death in Afghanistan this year, compared to 14 total last year, according to the tracking website iCasualties.org.
On Aug. 3, a U.S. soldier was killed and five troops were wounded when their joint patrol with the Afghan National Army was attacked by a suicide bomber in Kabul. Two soldiers were killed Aug. 2 in Kandahar by a car bomb that exploded near their convoy.
