Overheated ballot-counting machines in Palm Beach County forces recount to restart

A recount in Palm Beach County, Fla., was forced to restart.

Overheated ballot-counting machines, which are a decade old, provided incorrect totals, the Miami Herald reports.

Susan Bucher, the supervisor of elections, told reporters Tuesday evening that the county had to try again on around 175,000 early votes. Mechanics were called in to fix the machines after a day’s worth of work was lost.

After concluding Palm Beach County couldn’t meet its recount deadline, Leon County Circuit Judge Karen Gievers said she would grant an extension until Nov. 20. However, the case was moved to federal court before an order was issued in writing.

A number of races were close enough to trigger an automatic recount, including the U.S. Senate contest between Republican Gov. Rick Scott and Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and governor race between Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Andrew Gillum.
