Karen Pence given honorary role at Sister Cities International

Second lady Karen Pence will serve in a leadership role with peace advocacy organization, Sister Cities International, during her husband’s term in office, the White House announced Wednesday.

Pence’s new role as the group’s honorary vice chairwoman is effective as of today.

“Sister Cities International serves an important purpose of renewing and strengthening global relationships,” Pence said in a statement. “I am honored the organization asked me to serve as the Honorary Vice Chairwoman and I look forward to working alongside Sister Cities International to raise the visibility of this important resource to cities throughout our country and world.”

Sister Cities awarded Pence with its International Diplomatic Leadership Award in March. The former first lady of Indiana has previously partnered with the organization to create cultural and educational exchanges in the Hoosier State.

“We are delighted to have Mrs. Pence begin her new role as the Honorary Vice Chairwoman of Sister Cities International,” Sister Cities International President and CEO Mary Kane said in a statement. “Her experience as the First Lady of Indiana and now as the Second Lady of the United States demonstrates her commitment to sister cities programs and citizen diplomacy efforts throughout the United States.”

The organization was founded in 1956 by President Eisenhower.
