Cargo plane makes emergency landing off Hawaii coast, Coast Guard rescues two pilots

A cargo plane made an emergency landing in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii after pilots reported engine trouble.

Around 1:40 a.m. local time Friday, the Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu received a report that the Boeing 737 Transair Flight 810 experienced an engine malfunction, a Coast Guard spokesperson told the Washington Examiner.

The notification occurred just after the plane took off.

The pilots, who had departed from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu and were going to Kahului, Maui, decided to turn around, but the plane went down before they could make it back to land.

The Coast Guard found the debris and the two pilots less than an hour later. One of them was located on the tail of the plane, while the other was found on top of floating packages. The pilot who stayed on the tail of the plane was hoisted into a helicopter and transported to Queen’s Medical Center for evaluation, while the other was picked up by the Honolulu Fire Department rescue boat after being found on packages. The second pilot also received medical attention.

“We are aware of the reports out of Honolulu, Hawaii, and are closely monitoring the situation,” a Boeing spokesperson said in a statement. “We are in contact with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and are working to gather more information.”

The Federal Aviation Administration told the Washington Examiner that it is investigating the crash landing along with the National Transportation Safety Board.

The FAA cleared the Boeing 737 Max airplane for flight in November 2020 after two deadly crashes grounded all flights from the 737 Max in March 2019. The crashes, which occurred in Ethiopia and Indonesia, killed 376 passengers.

The flight Friday was not the same plane as the ones that went down in Ethiopia or Indonesia. Rather, this plane, the 737-200, has not been made in over 30 years.
