Carter says Allman Brothers helped him win White House

Former President Jimmy Carter said he may never have won the White House in 1976 if southern rockers, the Allman Brothers Band, hadn’t endorsed the former Georgia governor and peanut farmer.

The musicians’ embrace of Carter alerted the country that he “must be qualified to be president of the United States,” Carter told Mercer University graduates on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

Carter, a Mercer trustee, was on hand to award an honorary doctorate of humanities to Gregg Allman — only the third such honor bestowed on anyone by the school, according to the university.

Macon, Ga., home to Mercer’s main campus, is also where the band spent its early years, It is now the location of the a museum dedicated to the Hall of Fame rockers.
