Muslims riot as Jews celebrate Jerusalem Day on Temple Mount

Muslim rioters threw rocks and chairs at Israeli police in protest of Jews being on the Temple Mount to celebrate Jerusalem Day even though it was the last few days of Ramadan.

An Israeli police representative said that “riots broke out on the Temple Mount, including stone throwing, throwing of chairs and various objects, following which the commander of the Jerusalem district, Major General Doron Yedid, ordered police to enter the Temple Mount and deal with the rioters.”

Palestinian sources said one person was initially removed from the site.

Police reported that the rioting began again with hundreds of Muslim protesters engaging Israeli police with rocks.

The riots, which started Sunday morning, were in response to police allowing Jews to enter the Temple Mount after hundreds of Jewish activists demanded Sunday morning to be let in to celebrate Jerusalem Day.

Non-Muslims are typically banned from the site during the final 10 days of Ramadan. An agreement since 1967 allows non-Muslims to enter the Temple Mount under close supervision, but they are not allowed to pray at the site. The Temple Mount is a holy site for Muslims, Jews, and Christians.
