Dem guilty of corruption charges will leave in October

A day after a jury convicted Rep. Chaka Fattah, D-Pa., on 23 corruption charges, the congressman said he will leave his post on Oct. 3.

The two-decade Democratic congressman submitted a letter of resignation to Congress on Wednesday detailing his pan to step down in about 100 days.

“Despite my resignation, I am working to clear my name of these charges and plan to mount an appeal,” Fattah wrote in the statement.

Hours earlier, House Speaker Paul Ryan had called on Fattah’s immediate resignation after a Philadelphia jury deemed him guilty for crimes including money laundering, bribery, fraud and racketeering.

“Mr. Fattah has betrayed the trust of this institution and the people of Pennsylvania, and for that he should resign immediately from the House of Representatives,” Ryan said in a statement he released Wednesday. “We must hold members to the highest ethical standard and I hope that Democratic leaders will join me in seeking his immediate resignation.”

Fattah could be sentenced to lifetime in prison.
