Kamala Harris says Trump’s handling of A$AP Rocky case is a misuse of power

DETROIT — Kamala Harris thinks that President Trump’s attempts to help free rapper A$AP Rocky from jail in Sweden constitutes misuse of power.

“There is no question that this White House is being — has been playing politics with his — his role of leadership, and it has to end,” Harris said when asked about Trump’s actions in the A$AP Rocky case during the 110th annual NAACP conference presidential candidates forum on Wednesday. The California senator then went into her familiar refrain on how she has the experience to “prosecute the case” against Trump.

When pressed by moderator April Ryan, White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, about whether she thinks Trump’s interference in the A$AP Rocky case constituted a misuse of power, Harris replied that she did.

The rapper has been held in Swedish jail for weeks while officials in the country investigate an alleged assault. Officials fear that A$AP Rocky will flee the country if released.

Trump said that he first heard about A$AP Rocky’s situation from rapper Kanye West.

“I personally don’t know A$AP Rocky, but I can tell you that he has tremendous support from the African American community in this country,” Trump told reporters last week. “And when I say African American, I think I can really say from everybody in this country, because we’re all one.”

Trump later said in a tweet that he had “a very good call with @SwedishPM Stefan Löfven who assured me that American citizen A$AP Rocky will be treated fairly.” The president also said that he offered to pay the rapper’s bail. Sweden does not utilize a cash bail system.
