Employee: Student threatened mass killing at charter school

A 14-year-old student threatened to bring an Uzi to Chesapeake Science Point Charter School last week and kill everybody in the school, an employee said.

Anne Arundel police confirmed they were at the Hanover school Monday to investigate a threat from a student, but could not speak about details, said police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey Silverman.

No arrests have been made.

“Things have gotten really ugly around here,” said an employee Wednesday who spoke on condition of anonymity due to fear being punished.

“Most of us around here have known all about it.”

Employees? complaints have ranged from being repeatedly hit by apples, balls and chairs, to hearing students talk of raping and killing each other, to being threatened with being urinated on.

The employee said several employees are preparing to resign due to increasing threats and violence.

School system officials said they couldn?t verify information about last week?s incident.

“Appropriate disciplinary action” was taken against the student, said school system spokesman Bob Mosier.

The school system?s Office of School Security did not receive a report from the charter school about the threat, he said. Officials are trying to determine why the school failed to report the incident.

Principal Fatih Kandil returned to the school this month after temporarily being reassigned in January pending an investigation by the county Department of Social Services. It was alleged that he made students do push-ups and sit-ups.

He was cleared and allowed to return to his position, school officials said.

Kandil said he was unaware of most of the accusations such as rape and killing, and couldn?t speak about last week?s incident. He said much of what he?s heard was not true and was distracting to students.

“My impression is that the school?s no different than in the beginning of the year. Are we having issues? Of course we are, as all schools do,” he said.

“As soon as I was removed, it had a negative impact on students? behavior.”
