Slightly more U.S. voters view President Trump as unstable than stable despite his recent statement that he was a “stable genius,” according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.
The Jan. 12-16 survey found 47 percent of registered voters do not believe the president is in a fixed or steady state of mind, compared to 45 percent who disagree.
The poll was conducted in the midst of fallout over Trump’s “shithole countries” comment in a private meeting last week, as well as the White House’s denial that he told the Wall Street Journal he had a good relationship with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
The majority of voters – 58 percent – say Trump’s “shithole” remark was racist, but the poll did not ask voters whether they believe he made the comments in the first place.
Only 38 percent think Trump respects minorities as much as whites, compared to 59 percent who say he does not.
By a margin of nearly 2-to-1, voters say Trump is dividing the country – 64 percent – versus not uniting everyone, 31 percent.
The telephone survey was conducted with 1,212 registered voters nationwide and had a 3.4 percentage point margin of error.
