House and Senate lawmakers on Wednesday thanked the Capitol Police and Alexandria Police for stopping a shooting attack on Republicans at a baseball practice, and offered prayers for Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., who was shot in the hip and is now undergoing surgery.
“My thoughts and prayers with @SteveScalise, Capitol Police and staff at the shooting in Alexandria, VA this morning,” Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., tweeted.

 Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., a witness to the shooting, thanked the Capitol Police “who risk our lives to protect us.”

 House Republican Conference Chairwoman Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., asked that people “join me [in] praying for him [Scalise], his wife Jennifer, kids, staff & all involved.”

 House Democrats were having a baseball practice of their own nearby the Republicans, stopped their activity and prayed for the GOP.
“@HouseDemocrats praying for our @HouseGOP @SenateGOP baseball colleagues after hearing about the horrific shooting,” said Rep. Ruben Kihuen, D-Nev.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., called the shooting a “tragic moment.”

 Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., tweeted “we are all pulling” for Scalise.
Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., tweeted the Capitol Police “likely prevented more injuries.”

 Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., expressed shock that Scalise, his colleague, was shot.
“Unbelievable that someone would attempt the life of an honorable, gracious, positive person,” Diaz-Balart said.
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, called the incident a “terrible tragedy” but called on Congress to get back to work.
“It is beyond horrifying to hear that our fellow members of Congress and the staffers who support them had been under attack, and I pray that they will also recover quickly from their injuries,” Hatch said. “With that, though it will difficult, I think we should turn to the business at hand, which will hopefully provide an opportunity for us to come together and set differences aside.”
