Pregnancy is not a disease Re: “Insurers must cover birth control with no copays,” Aug. 1
I am disappointed with the Obama administration’s new standards requiring health insurance plans to cover all government-approved contraceptives for women. This is yet a further example of Obama’s wish for a culture of death that is already sweeping the nation.
Pope Paul VI rightly predicted back in 1968 (Humanae Vitae) that contraception would lead to a lowering of moral standards, a rise in infidelity and promiscuity, a lessening of respect for women and government-enforced limitations on population.
Today, as a result of the widespread use of contraceptives, the number of divorces, out-of-wedlock pregnancies, abortion, AIDS and venereal diseases are spiraling. Women are no longer beloved and respected individuals but have become objects of pleasure.
Essentially, contraceptives have led men and women to believe they have limitless control over their bodies. This has caused an increase in demand for the evils of surgical sterilization, in vitro fertilization and euthanasia.
The government should not be presenting pregnancy as if were a disease. It should be preaching abstinence and marital fidelity.

Libertarianism only works with uniform morals
Re: “Young people are becoming libertarians,” Letters, July 28
“Freedom is the right not to do what you want, but to do as you ought.” Abraham Lincoln’s quote underscores a major flaw of libertarianism. Clint Townsend argues that individual liberty means relying on your conscience to determine right and wrong. Unfortunately, too many libertarians like Townsend assume every American shares their moral standards. This is not true.
For example, a pimp believes it is right to make money off prostitutes even if they are underage sex slaves. Anyone who objects to the pimp profiting from child rape will be branded by him as a threat to “individual liberty.”
Society eventually begins to collapse when it is no longer based on universal moral standards. Ironically, this social chaos often leads to people embracing the very Big Government that libertarians rail against. The rise of Nazi Germany is a classic example.
Hence, conservatism is the best option for society by balancing individual freedom with personal responsibility and respect for fellow citizens. This results in people capable of self-government, which is the best defense against Big Government.

Using God’s name in vain is offensive, too
Re: “Judge tosses attempt to stop Texas prayer rally,” July 28
Finally, a forum to voice one of my pet peeves: People suing over the use of prayer and the names of deity in public settings. Well, I want to sue every TV program that uses the deity’s name in vain! I find that so offensive!
Where can I step up to demand no mention of deity on TV programing because of the gross way people talk nowadays. As a kindergarten teacher, I have to put up with this from students who don’t know it is profaning. It’s how mom and dad talk.
I tell the students it is a Sunday word and today is not Sunday. I’m tired of hearing them slander and blaspheme his name!
