Ilhan Omar claims jobs program she crafted with Booker will ‘pay for itself’

Rep. Ilhan Omar claimed to CNN that the government jobs program plan she introduced with Democratic New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker will “pay for itself.”

“It would create a pilot program to guarantee jobs for anyone that wants one. That’s ambitious. It would cost a lot of money. What is the number one thing you would do to pay for that?” anchor Erin Burnett asked the Minnesota Democrat on Monday.

“This is a idea that was a long legacy. It was proposed by Franklin Roosevelt. It was supported by Martin Luther King, Jr. It’s going to allow, it’s a … pilot program that is going to allow 15 communities within this country to create this program and I think ultimately when these jobs are created and people are placed in these jobs, it will pay for itself,” Omar said.

First introduced in 2018, the Federal Jobs Guarantee Development Act would establish a three-year pilot program at the Department of Labor. The jobs will not only provide “a living wage,” they will also provide “benefits like health insurance, paid sick leave, and paid family leave” to those who want to work.
