ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia recently received an award for an exhibition and accompanying book on the work of cabinetmaker and antiques collector Gene Thomas.
The Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation recognized the museum for “Georgia Bellflowers: The Furniture of Henry Eugene Thomas.” Thomas was a native of Athens who helped shape the focus of decorative arts collecting in the state.
The exhibition and book relied on the research of Ashley Callahan, who donated her research files to the museum’s Henry D. Green Center for the Study of the Decorative Arts, where she is the former curator.
The Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation was founded in 1967 and is a proactive force in developing community-wide understanding of the value of historic buildings, neighborhoods and heritage.
