Engineering a tea party

The Engineers Club, which bills itself as Baltimore?s Club for Professionals, has been around for 102 years and has been the scene of a century?s worth of weddings, receptions and parties, both large and small. Recently, the Women?s Auxiliary at the club held a tea party to raise funds for the restoration of its home, the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion in Mount Vernon.

The Women?s Club was founded in 1961 to promote fellowship through social, educational and civic interest, and like all good things it has stood up to the test of time.

The ladies arrived donning lovely chapeaus, but don?t let the fact that they are clubmates fool you. There was a fierce hat competition, judged by the club?s executive director, Dale Whitehead, with input from Auxiliary members Keri Haas and Hazel Wood.

“We do all we can to keep this lovely place lovely,” said Joan Magnani.

The competition was fun, and the dining ? which included sandwiches, sweet treats, fresh juices, coffee, and a wide selection of teas ? was delicious.

GREAT WINE, GREAT CAUSE

The fifth annual Howard County Wine Masters Event ? to benefit the Maryland Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation? was held recently at the lovely home of Randy and Mary Marriner. Guests were treated not only to a wonderful venue, but also to some of the best wine Socially Speaking has ever tasted, thanks to co-chair and master vintner Gus Kalaris.

As guest auctioneer, Kalaris also played a huge role in the success of the live auction. Founding sponsors Tom and Patty Buescher donated a pedigree Maltese puppy, which brought a whopping $10,000 bid.

Mammoth Golf?s William Albright and his wife Stephanie, well known for her tireless work with the Albright Foundation, were spotted having fun for this great cause. Howard County Executive Ken Ulman and his wife Jaki joined the party as did former Gov. Robert Ehrlich and his wife Kendel.

More than $235,000 was raised for this worthwhile cause.

THIS ONE IS PERSONAL

The National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Coalition?s “Walk for Her” will host its first 5K run and 3K walk at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis this Sunday at 8 a.m. This is dear to Socially Speaking?s heart because my mom, my hero and the original “Liz Smith of Baltimore,” ? Sylvia Badger of News American and Sun fame ? was diagnosed this summer with ovarian cancer. For information, call Nikki Karl at 443-822-5125 or e-mail her at [email protected].
