Anne Boone-Simanski: Turning out to help encourage health and wellness

DAY UNO

Radcliffe Jeweler?s owner Paul Winicki and his wife, Karen, are plenty used to being surrounded by lovely things. So when they invited some of their loyal customers for a fine reception with a treat, they showed up in 14-karat gold fashion.

Imagine 51 Miss USA beautiful young ladies, coupled with the unveiling of the 2006 Mikimoto-designed crown and surrounded by beautiful baubles. What?s a gal to do?

While the male audience took in the sights, the women did what they do best ? SHOP ? and with zero guilt because a portion of the proceeds going to the Red Devils, a group supporting Maryland families living with breast cancer.

Helping the cause were Genesis Rehabilitation?s Dan Hirschfeld and his wife, Stephanie; power couple Dr. Mary Pat Seurkamp and Robert W. Seurkamp; Ted Herget; Chuck Nabit; Candy man Spaulding Goetzi; David Scheffenacker; and Hank Wright. A cutie moment was when venerable attorney C. Carey Deeley watched his eighth-grade daughter, Lins, and her Notre Dame Prep gal pals spend quality time with Miss Texas, Lauren Lanning. From those young ladies? perspective, the Mikimoto crown is going to the Lone Star State!

PHASE AND DAZE TWO: RED, WHITE and BEAUTIFUL

A gentleman I met at Radcliffe?s the very next evening hosted and served as Honorary Chair to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Edward St. John, St. John Properties, opened his lovely home to the talents of Carlton & Co. Caterers and floral creations by Gateway Florist.

Upon arrival, guests were escorted in by the Naval Academy?s Midshipman. Given that they also would be escorting the Miss USA ladies, they were thrilled with this call to duty!

C.F. board member Sharon Akers welcomed many from all across the great state of Maryland, including Buzzy and Cheryl Krongard; John Paterakis and his lovely friend Paula Passon; former Gov. Marvin Mandel; attorney Michael V. Johansen; Canton Group?s Robb Banks; and Mobile Parking?s Jason Boseck.

This magnificent setting provided a perfect setting for the young contestants to meet and greet, and gave all who attended a rare opportunity to mingle with vintners and wine experts.

One of those was the president of Constantine Wines, Gus Kalaris, who gave us a sneak sip of his Premier of 2003 AXIOS, which will be released in May. First lady Kendel Ehrlich got the crowd going with a lively ? LIVE ? auction featuring luxury items such as a Paris-Rome-London getaway, six-course chef tasting menu for 10 by chef Jerry Pellegrino of Corks, accompanied by fine wines from you Gus?s wine cellar, and a 50-yard line Ravens Sky Box right next to the governor?s box!

Special thanks to the Cystic Fibrosis Board?s Steve Krulevitz, whose wife, Ann, also served as this event?s director; Stuart and Suzanne Amos; Tom and Patty Buescher; Randy and Mary Marriner; Bob and Judy Saunders; and the generous support of Henry Wright.

All of the tireless efforts and dollars raised that night will go to help find a cure for the more than 30,000 Americans living with Cystic Fibrosis.
