Area congressmen fill young minds with Dr. Seuss

Dr. Suess was the crowd-pleasing author of choice (and might we add noted Democrat) for two area congressmen (and might we add noted Democrats) working the kiddie vote Friday to commemorate Read Across America Day. The day falls on the week of Seuss’s March 2 birthday, and of World Book Day on March 3.

Gerry Connolly, D-Fairfax, read “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” at Fairfax’s Mantua Elementary. Elijah Cummings, D-Baltimore, read the popular “Cat in the Hat,” along with a lesser known tribute to pedi-diversity, “The Foot Book,” at Howard County’s Clarksville Elementary.

The readings allowed the seasoned politicians to send thickly-veiled political messages to their mini-constituents. We hardly feel the responsibility to interpret for you the following passages:

From “The Foot Book”: “Here come clown feet, small feet, big feet. Here come pig feet.”

From “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!”: “You’ll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You’ll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact, and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left.”

And finally, from “Cat in the Hat,” about the perils of balancing too many things at once, including angry fish: “We can have a lot of good fun if you wish with a game I call Up Up Up With the Fish!”
