President Trump praised U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson during a Wednesday press gaggle in the Oval Office because he “knows how to win.”
Trump’s remarks come a day after Johnson’s parliamentary opponents won control of the legislative agenda, who voted 329-300 Tuesday to pass a bill that would prevent Johnson from withdrawing from the European Union without an agreement. The prime minister has pledged to leave the EU by Oct. 31.
“Boris is a friend of mine, and he’s going at it. There’s no question about it. I watched him this morning. He’s in there fighting. He knows how to win. Boris knows how to win. Don’t worry about him, he’s going to be okay,” Trump stated.
He continued, “He’s also got — you know, they have a big stake in the Bahamas. When he mentioned that, they have a very big stake in the Bahamas. So, I know they have one ship on its way, had a hard time getting there with the weather. But it’s on its way and they have a lot of people over there. So they have a big stake.”
Johnson is expected to ask for Parliament to approve a snap election for next month. The election will likely determine whether or not the United Kingdom will leave the EU. The Labour Party, Johnson’s opposition party led by Jeremy Corbyn, is likely to cancel Brexit.
