Broadway theaters in New York are suspending all performances through April 12 over the coronavirus.
The Broadway League announced the cancellations on Thursday, citing direction from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The league said that customers who have already paid for tickets to canceled shows are eligible for refunds.
“Our top priority has been and will continue to be the health and well-being of Broadway theatregoers and the thousands of people who work in the theatre industry every day, including actors, musicians, stagehands, ushers, and many other dedicated professionals,” Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin said.
“Broadway has the power to inspire, enrich and entertain, and together we are committed to making that vital spirit a reality,” St. Martin continued. “Once our stages are lit again, we will welcome fans back with open arms so that they can continue to experience the joy, heart, and goodwill that our shows so passionately express every night.”
New York reported 328 confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Thursday, an increase of 112 cases from the day before. Cuomo announced on Thursday that the state would ban most gatherings of 500 or more people, including at Broadway shows.
