Kerry Washington wants Kamala Harris to be first female president of color

The United States is close to having its first female presidential nominee for a major political party, but actress Kerry Washington already knows who she wants to make history next.

Washington was asked by the Huffington Post if the U.S. is ready for a female president of color during her appearance at the United State of Women summit hosted by the White House Tuesday.

Her response: California Attorney General Kamala Harris, who is running for the Senate.

“I think she is extraordinary. I do think she could be president one day,” Washington said. “But for now, I really want her to increase the number of women and people of color in the Senate by winning that California race.”

The “Scandal” star initially sounded baffled by the question.

“Wow. I don’t know,” she said, laughing. “We’re in a really challenging place as a country right now. Some of the rhetoric around women and immigrants and people of color is breathtaking to me. But I think there are also a lot of us fighting for inclusivity and justice, so I don’t know that it’s in the next term, but maybe. I don’t know.”

Washington has gone on the record as a Hillary Clinton supporter, even appearing in a campaign ad for the former secretary of state featuring other television stars from Shonda Rhimes’ Thursday night ABC lineup.
