Vernon Winfrey, the father of media maven Oprah Winfrey, died Friday in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 89 following a battle with cancer.
“With family surrounding his bedside, I had the sacred honor of witnessing the man responsible for my life, take his last breath,” Oprah Winfrey wrote on Instagram. “We could feel Peace enter the room at his passing. That Peace still abides. All is well. Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts.”

The media and entertainment mogul said she, along with family and friends, had thrown him a barbecue last weekend to share their appreciation for Vernon Winfrey.
“We wanted to be able to have all of his friends come and celebrate him while he’s able to receive the joy,” Oprah said.
Oprah’s father was a barber in the Tennessee capital. During the barbecue, she thanked him for being the “kind of father who has brought honor to your life and honor to my life,” according to Oprah Daily.

Oprah recently honored her father in a Father’s Day message.
“If it were not for him, I doubt that anybody in the world would know my name,” Winfrey said. “I know firsthand how the trajectory of life can change by the positive influence of a good father.”
