George H.W. Bush to be buried in socks honoring ‘lifetime of service’

Even in death, George H.W. Bush will carry on his tradition of wearing socks with a special meaning.

The former president will be buried in socks that pay tribute to his military service, his spokesman said Monday.

“The 41st President will be carried to his final rest wearing socks that pay tribute to his lifetime of service, starting as an 18 year-old naval aviator in war. That legacy is now being carried, in part, by the brave, selfless men and women aboard,” Jim McGrath tweeted Monday.

McGrath included a photo of blue socks with military planes and a naval aviator pin, honoring the late president’s service in the Navy.

At the funeral of his wife, Barbara, in April, the former president wore socks with books pictured on them to honor the former first lady’s passion for literacy.

Bush died Friday at age 94. His funeral is Wednesday at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. He’ll be buried Thursday at his presidential library and museum at Texas A&M University.
