The Obama administration wants to reduce the time it takes for patients to receive an organ while on the transplant list.

The White House rolled out a list of proposals on Monday aimed at reducing the list, through which it can take years for people to get a donor. More than 120,000 people are on the waiting list for an organ.

The vast majority, almost 100,000, need a kidney transplant. The administration noted that cutting down the list could save the government money, as Medicare pays more than $34 billion a year to care for patients with end-stage kidney failure.

The White House plans to provide nearly $200 million in research for reducing the waiting list, and treatments to repair or replace tissues and organs.

The administration also hopes to put out an update in the next few months with concrete ways to reduce the waiting list. These include narrowing the gap between the 95 percent of Americans that support organ donation and the roughly 50 percent who are registered organ donors.
