Judge denies bail in fatal beating

A Howard County District judge ordered the 18-year-old man charged in the fatal beating of Robert Brazell to be held without bond Tuesday. During the bail review hearing, Judge Neil E. Axel said the nature and severity of the charges against Kevin F. Klink warranted his confinement.

Klink faces first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment charges.

Klink?s attorney, Don Discepolo, called the charging documents ? which allege Klink beat an unarmed man from behind with an aluminum bat during a brawl Saturday ? “defective,” and said his client wasn?t given a Miranda.

Klink is due in court March 27.

T.J. Culler described his Brazell as “a really fun guy to be around.” “He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time,” the 17-year-old Mount Hebron High School senior said in Ellicott City on Monday.

Brazell was fatally beaten during a 20-person row at Mount Hebron High over the weekend, police said.

Police could not comment on how Saturday?s brawl began, only that it was the grisly resolution of a long-standing feud between two groups.

Mount Hebron High students said Monday that faculty and administrators had been sparing with details.

Matthew Miner, 18, said his classmate, who withdrew from Mount Hebron last December, had a wealth of friends, a flair for humor ? even if it miffed teachers a bit ? and a love for fast cars.

“He didn?t deserve this,” Miner said.

Schools spokeswoman Patti Caplan said the fight did not appear school-related. Grief counselors talked to students about Brazell?s death at Mount Hebron on Monday.

Klink faces first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment charges.

Police found Brazell in a heap on an athletic field after midnight Saturday. He was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he died, Howard County Police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn said.

Two 17-year-old Hammond High School students, Jacob Sams and Evan Tubbs, also were found near the front of the school. They were taken by ambulance to Shock Trauma and released hours later.

Detectives learned through witnesses that at least 20 people participated in the brawl, some wielding baseball bats, Llewellyn said.

Witnesses at the scene also led police to Klink.

Klink, a 2006 Oakland Mills High School graduate, agreed to meet police at the Shell gas station Sunday night after detectivescalled and informed him of a warrant for his arrest, Llewellyn said.

Brazell?s death marks the first homicide in Howard County this year. There were four last year, police said.

Kevin Francis Klink, 18, of Columbia, has been charged in connection with the death of Robert Brazell.
