Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said he anticipates a tough road ahead for his colleague Elizabeth Warren in his home state as she tests the waters for a 2020 presidential run.
Speaking to CNN on Tuesday, Manchin suggested the liberal senator from Massachusetts should change her tune to appeal to his constituents.
“Elizabeth will have a hard time in West Virginia, she really would, but she’s welcome to come down. Maybe she can change her positions,” Manchin said.
Warren announced on Dec. 31 that she had launched an exploratory committee for a White House bid, which allows her to raise money without formally declaring. Last weekend she held a number of events in early-voting Iowa — a clear sign she is gauging the reception to her impending bid.
Manchin’s warning comes a little more than two years after President Trump beat Hillary Clinton in West Virginia by more than 42 percent.
