Celebrities and Chelsea Clinton help raise money for ACLU during four-hour telethon

A slew of celebrities and Chelsea Clinton headlined a four-hour telethon to raise money for the American Civil Liberties Union on Friday.

The star-studded event to support the civil rights advocacy group that has been a leading legal opponent of President Trump’s two travel bans included musical performances and comedy routines. It was hosted Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey. Besides Fey, several other current and former “Saturday Night Live” cast members also participated, including Amy Poehler and Seth Myers. Liberal filmmaker and activist Michael Moore was also in attendance.

The celebrities on the program repeatedly brought up politics, including jabs at the Trump administration.

Fey made fun of Trump for declaring the month of April to be “National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.”

“Earlier tonight, in what is surely an April Fools’ joke, the president proclaimed that next month will be National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, so now we know what he gave up for Lent,” she said.

Fey also mocked Vice President Mike Pence for saying the only woman he dines alone with is his wife.

“Luckily, Mike Pence isn’t allowed to go down and shut Planned Parenthood unless his wife goes with him,” she said. “So, if we can just keep Karen busy scrapbooking, we can all still get Pap smears.”

At one point Baldwin, whose unflattering impersonations of President Trump have become an “SNL” hit, quipped, “I’m not Donald Trump, but I did impersonate him once to get a Fast Pass at the Kremlin.”

Chelsea Clinton, daughter of Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, also made a short appearance. She talked about how the ACLU has helped people take states’ voting-rights issues to court and introduced a video of Ruthelle Frank, a Wisconsin resident barred from voting in Wisconsin since 2011 because she lacks a proper ID. The ACLU has teamed up with Ruthelle to challenge Wisconsin’s voter ID law in a case that is still being fought in an appellate court.

Clinton said Ruthelle and the ACLU aren’t giving up before adding, “I’m not giving up.”
