There are certain realities about this summer’s transition of ownership of the Washington Wizards that are undeniably true. First, the deal is sealed but it simply is not done yet. So while Ted Leonsis may indeed see the keys on the desk, he hasn’t yet been able to actually pick them put and put them in the ignition.
Second, everyone in the franchise also knows he’s now the driver, and the thing ain’t going anywhere without him.
Third, and most importantly, the process isn’t easy, not when the Wizards have been run by one man, Abe Pollin, for 46 years, and it isn’t being taken lightly by any of the parties involved. Instead, in a gesture that both shows respect for what the Pollins have meant to the team and aims to tie in their past legacy with the team’s future, Irene Pollin, Abe Pollin’s widow, will represent the Wizards at Tuesday’s NBA Draft Lottery in Secaucus, N.J.
Will that mean the Wizards, with the fifth-best chance to get the first pick, will move up for just the second time in 14 visits to the lottery? It would certainly make for the perfect Pollin family send-off.
